Micro-grid Applications and Design Considerations

Description: Micro-grids or better described as Distributed Energy Resources (DER’s) come in all shapes and sizes, along with the cost and benefits of implementing this technology that varies from project to project. Developing a clear understanding of where, when, and how to implement micro-grid technology is the first step to creating a more secure, sustainable, and resilient electrical infrastructure of the future. Attendees will learn about and discuss:

• Micro-grid components – Combining DER’s such as Solar PV, Energy Storage, CHP, Generators, and Utility services

• Design Criteria – Must run, like to run, luxuries

• Military Applications – Advanced fighting capabilities requires advanced military installations

• Government Applications – Security, sustainability, contract vehicles and funding

• University Campus Applications – Environmental stewardship & public/private partnerships, energy savings, and property owners

• Health Care Applications – Resiliency & security through long term investments

• Data Center Applications – Data is the new bacon

Speaker:  Lisa Demetrius-Walker is the Microgrid Commercial Sales Manager for the Americas in the Hybrid Energy Solutions division at Caterpillar Inc. During her 15-year career at Caterpillar, Lisa has worked in Americas South region for 13 years with our Caterpillar dealer network to incorporate and promote power generation solutions in the areas of Electric Power, Gas, Rental, Industrial, and Parts for the region. Lisa also worked in the telecommunications market selling Olympian power generation and promoting emerging energy technologies such as our CAT hybrid using solar photovoltaic and energy storage with diesel generator sets in the Caribbean and Latin American telecom industry. Lisa in last few years has worked with various divisions to incorporate the hybrid technologies into the Caterpillar power systems portfolio for our dealer network. Lisa now works in the Hybrid Energy Solutions division responsible for Microgrid Solutions sales in the Eastern USA, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean. Lisa holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering from Florida International University, graduating with engineering honors in 2001.

Scott Schmitz – Business Development Micro-grid Energy Systems is well known to the District of Columbia’s Department of Energy and Environment, as well as industry groups such as the Washington Advanced Energy Roundtable, leads the Alban CAT Micro-grid Solar PV team. Scott came to Alban as an industry professional with over 15 years of experience specializing in solar PV and solar thermal for both commercial and residential projects. His experience includes grid-tied, micro grid, and off grid applications. In addition Scott has ten years of construction experience implementing critical infrastructure, energy systems, utility construction, excavating and blasting
